Nathan Cole, cadenza for Mozart Violin Concerto No. 4
Download my cadenza and learn how to write your own:

Violin: 1729 Stradivari, "Jack Benny"
Bow: Finn Meyer, 2001
For years, I'd promised myself that when (if) I got to play a Mozart concerto with orchestra, I'd play my own cadenza. I waited, 10...15...20 years.
Then I got the chance. On 2 days' notice. So... tried-and-true Joachim it was. "The next time, I swear I'll have my own cadenza ready!" I vowed.
Well, I still don't have a Mozart 4 date on the calendar, but my cadenza will be ready. Unless I decide to tear it down and rebuild it.
The download linked above contains not only the final part for this cadenza, but my sketches and key motifs. Why not try your hand at wr...

Bravo. All ways a pleasure to hear you. Please, could you tell me the name of this thing you're using as a shoulder rest? Where can we buy it? I thank you forward!!! Paulo Vieira
I like how you’re in a sauna.
Hello Mr Nathan! I hope you also tackle the other ornaments or embellishment to put in a music.. I dont know where to put, and will there be a overusing of ornaments too? Please use a pop music to demonstrate, thank you so much!!!
Thanks for this! Congratulations on the new post!
Nathan Could you tell me, please, the name off this thing do you use on your shoulder? Where could I buy it? I thank you a lot forward.
Amazing video. Very detailed 👌
now that i have started to control my fourth finger to be more curved it wants to go flat pitchwise 😭 any tips on getting the third and fourth finger to separate comfortable?
May i ask how do you keep the sound clean while you're playing harmonics with a huge vibrato at 01:23 ? If you make a video about it, I'd be really appreciate :) thanks a lot
Wonderful
Gorgeous playing! Thank you!
Very insightful about playing speed resisting sneaking the metronome up because of slowness practiced in. And congratulation on your latest appointment -- probably the best job there is to be had all in all, I'd think. Ale-8 toast!
Why don't the best players win auditions? Except in the case of the Boston Symphony concertmaster audition, when it did happen? 😂
Congrats!!!
I am very confused, how is this possible??
Thank you for this wonderful advice. However, when I try to download the manual, I get to a 404 error message after providing my first name and email address. Is this manual still available?
I was following you because of your magnificent approach to Milstein's legendary violín... Now I was informed of your new engagement as BSO concertmaster. Well deserved, congratulations, Mr. Cole!!! 😃
Congratulations on your new job with the BSO. You deserve it!
Master class for any musician who does performance 🙏🏿 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Wow congratulations!! Al the very best !
Came here after the news from the BSO, congrats!! You’ll be a fantastic concertmaster :)
Yes indeed! Congratulations. We look forward to having you in Boston.
And we need to get him a Sox t-shirt ;)
Can't tell you how helpful these are, Nathan. Thank you so much!
Hi Nathan, what type of leather do you use to support the violin? Thank you for the video!
Thanks, I'll add it on my practices
Hi Mr. Cole. I'm really appreciate for your all videos. I'm trying to develop my skills and these masterclasses videos really helps me. May I ask you that can you share some videos about music theory, something like what is cadenza and how its working, when the composer putting in the music, how it starts and continue etc. Because i love the way you're teaching so clear and understandable and i need to develop my music theory. Because i understand with watching videos better then reading. Thanks a lot! I wish you health, greetings from Turkiye 🌼
Bravo!
Hidden Lesson: Good acoustics in a field! Curtis should take notes!

Wonderful 👍 Got my first violin a week ago, your video is great. Thank you.😊
Six months for me. Keep it up, it gets better.

This video is GOLD
Great video with excellent information. Thank you very much.
I like how the length is in proportion to the movement. Very elegant.
Awesome! great job
nice cadenza bro
Amazing! (And inspiring!!)
Thanks so much!
Fab playing and composing! Wow. Great job Boss!
This is wonderful! I am looking forward to your Piece It Together event and playing your cadenza. Thank you for making it available to us!
Thanks, the event should be lots of fun!
Nathan!!!
Muy bien
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Epic tutorial.
From what I gather here, and in another sub-harmonic demonstration video, I think the resulting sub-harmonic pitch is always a major 7th below the sub-harm. node that's pressed. (In your video, you pressed a node located at c#4, and the resulting pitch was a d3.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ By the way, may I compliment you greatly on just how beautifully crystal you had produced the sub-harm sound? In the recent past, I started writing a Viola passage that contained subharmonics like this, not knowing how viable it would be. Another video had shown that it was possible but quite difficult; the Violinist (not naming names, obviously) was able to do it, but poorly. Discouraged, I cancelled my intentions to include this extended technique. Thanks to your video demonstrating it excellently here, however, I now feel more confident to put the passage back into my composition. 👍
I do want to reassure you, I'm only include 2 or 3 pitches below C3 (Viola); in a section that is bi-tonal or atonal. Momentary growling while using the sub-harmonic could be quite appropriate (in what I'm writing).
i was today years old when i learned my fingers don't have muscles! lol
your box method is great. I use it for my golf swing all the time, but I've heard it called the "Goldilocks Method" (it's too hot, too cold, just right). Being able to feel what is "just right" requires you to be able to do too much or too little to feel what is "just right". Great vid!
I was watching a Yehudi Menuhin left hand technique video. It appears he only contacts the violin with his thumb and has a space on the other side of the neck. It doesn't appear you play this way. I find it near impossible to support the violin doing it Menuhin's way. I can see how if you could you would gain incredible freedom in the left hand but it seems impossible for me. I think many violinists do not play this way so I would say it's not necessary but I wondered if you could comment on this. Have you tried at all to play that way?
Hi Nathan! I know I'm bit late but how can I spiccato faster than 90 bpm (16th notes)? Up until the sautillé speed (for me, that's around 120 bpm), I just can't play it faster, bow just falls down to string and doesn't bounce. Also, I find it quite difficult to play in different dynamics, I would be very pleased if you have any tips. Thanks in advance!
Try using just two fingers, your thumb and pointer finger on the bow. Don't move your arm, just your wrist.
@juliejules7780 thanks so much, i'll try that 🙏
Would it be fair to say that one should be having taste and conservative ? So, it's not a place to be creative, artist, innovative ? BTW: great sound and great recording quality !
